SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Gauchos finished up their three-day tournament at home Sunday in the UCSB Classic claiming the top spots in Flight B doubles and singles and a second place finish in Flight A singles.
UCSB started the day in doubles play, where the partnership of Axel Bouillin and Sasha Gryaznov took on the duo Victor Ouvrad and Fernando Sunago of Nevada. The Gauchos were able to post a routine 8-3 win to take first place in Flight B doubles.
Senior Benjamin Recknagel had a solid day at the courts where he beat Cal's Wyatt Houghton 6-2, 6-1 to win the top spot in Flight B singles. Recknagel was also partnered with SBCC transfer Miles Seemann in Flight B doubles where the pair won 8-2 over Beasley and Klein of Cal Poly to take third place.
Sophomore Axel Bouillin, who had a stellar day Saturday posting two straight set wins to reach the finals in the top singles flight, lost in a close match to Cal's Gregory Bayane 7-5, 7-5. Bouillin finished in second place in singles for the second year in a row at the UCSB Classic after losing last year to teammate Mbonisi Ndimande.
The Gauchos sent out two other players in the Flight A singles, both of whom claimed a victory. Ndimande won in his matchup against Toki Sherbakov from UC Davis 6-2, 6-0 to take fifth place and Ziad Sultan won his match 6-4, 6-2 to claim the number nine spot.
The UCSB men's tennis team will be in action next weekend at the ITA Regionals in Irvine.
