SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara senior Mathieu Forget was named Big West Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. It was the third time in 2012 that Forget has selected for the award.
Forget was perfect in his three matches at No. 1 singles last week. On Thursday, March 29, he swept past Chapman Chan of UC San Diego, 6-2, 6-3. Two days later, on Saturday, March 31, Forget was pushed by Denver's Enei Bonin, but swept again, 7-6, 7-5. Finally, on April 1, he helped the Gauchos to an important Big West Conference win over Pacific with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Tigers' Ben Mirkin.
Forget also teamed with Mbonisi Ndimande to help UCSB seal the doubles point against Pacific. The Gaucho duo defeated Ivan Castro and Alex Hamilton, 8-3.
"He's the man," head coach Marty Davis said of his senior leader. "Mathieu has been leading this team all season and he just keeps doing it. I'm very happy for him and this honor is very deserving."
Forget is now 12-6 in dual matches this season, including 9-6 while playing No. 1. The only senior on the roster, he will play his final home match as a Gaucho on Wednesday, April 11, when UCSB hosts Loyola Marymount in a 1:30 p.m. on the Recreation Center Courts.
