No. 50 Gauchos Edged at No. 53 Cal Poly, 4-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In a fiercely fought college tennis match, No. 50 UC Santa Barbara dropped a tight one at No. 53 Cal Poly, 4-3.

The Mustangs won two out of the three doubles matches to earn the vital doubles point and then the teams split the six singles matches 

The first doubles match off the court was No. 2 where Jordan Bridge and Brian McPhee defeated UCSB's Alexander Gryaznov and Ziad Sultan, 8-2.  The No. 1 doubles match also went to Cal Poly by the same score with Andre Dome and Matt Fawcett defeating Matchiu Forget and Mbonisi and Ndimande.  The Gauchos' duo of Axel Bouilin and Alex Johnson edged Marco Comuzzo and Jurgen De Jager, 8-7. 

In singles, UCSB posted wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.  At No. 3, Ndimande swept Comuzzo, 7-5, 6-4.  Bouilin needed three sets to do away with at No. 5, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and Sultan swept Sebastian Bell, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Mustangs posted wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. At No. 1, Dome, the 25th-ranked singles player in the country, beat Forget by a 6-2, 6-1 count.  

UCSB is now 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the Big West.  Cal Poly, which won its seventh straight, is 7-3 overall, 2-0 in league.  The Gauchos return home on Sunday afternoon to host No. 33 Santa Clara in a 11:00 a.m. match at the Recreation Center Courts.
