HONOLULU - UC Santa Barbara won five out of six singles matches as well as the doubles point to post a 6-1 win over Gonzaga on Saturday in Honolulu. The win was the Gauchos first of the season and evens their record at 1-1.
UCSB got off the a good start, easily winning two out of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 singles duo of Mathieu Forget and Mbonisi Ndimande pounded Olivier Jamin and Alvaro Nazal, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, it was Benjamin Recknagel and Ziad Sultan defeating Levin Guillermo and Muzeen Smath, 8-3.
The Gauchos were outstanding in singles, posting wins at the top five spots in the lineup and sweeps at the top four. At No. 1, Forget topped Nazal, 6-3, 6-0. Playing No. 2, Benjamin Recknagel made quick work of Guillermo, 6-1, 6-1, while Greg Scott won at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2 over Jamin) and Mdimande won at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2 over Vladimir Mijatovic). Axel Bouillin defeated Scott Sullivan, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 5.
The Bulldogs recorded their only win of the match at No. 6 singles where Zhia Hwa Chong topped UCSB's Ziad Sultan, 2-6, 7-5, 10-5.
"We were fantastics in the top four singles positions," said Gauchos' head coach Marty Davis. "It was total doination. The matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots were very, very competitive."
UCSB will play the host University of Hawai'i in its final match on the islands on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 10:00 a.m. The Gauchos will then return home to host BYU at the Recreation Center Courts on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 1:00 p.m.
