Gregg Wilson Named to World University Games Coaching Staff

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara head men's and women's swim coach Gregg Wilson has been named to the 2009 World University Games U.S. coaching staff it was announced by USA Swimming recently. Wilson, a 25-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year, will serve as an assistant women's coach.

Wilson will travel with the U.S. World University Games swim team to Belgrade, Serbia for the swim competition being held July 5-11 of 2009. He will be joined by head coach Steve Bultman (College Station, Texas) and fellow assistant coach Matt Kredich (Knoxville, Tenn.).

"The coaches who work with our young athletes at the World University Games play an integral role in the development of USA Swimming's most outstanding young talent," said Mark Schubert, USA Swimming's National Team head coach and general manager. "By putting experienced and successful coaches in key roles with our young teams, we are providing the athletes with the best possible foundation for their continued international success."

Senior Katy Freeman will also be making the trip to Serbia. Freeman qualified for the World University Games roster after placing third in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:29.68) and fifth in 100-meter breast (1:09.55) at the U.S. Open in Minneapolis, Minn. this past summer. She will swim the 50, 100 and 200 breast at the World University Games.

Wilson, who is in his 33rd year at UCSB, has coached the Gauchos to a combined 39 Big West Conference Championships and last season coached the Gaucho women to a 25th place finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.

The Gaucho swim team, which has kicked-off the 2008-09 season, will continue dual meet action at home this week with a nonconference meet against UC San Diego on Friday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
