Nov. 12, 2005
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - With the swimming and diving season already underway, the UC Santa Barbara men and women were selected to finish first in the preseason coaches poll released Thursday, November 10, 2005. The Gaucho men received five first place votes and 35 points. Returning for UCSB's men are Big West standouts Pat Cary and Patrick Ota. The women's team, which captured three first place votes and 33 points, returns last year's Big West individual champions Jennifer Schwalb (200 butterfly) and Jennifer Cook (100 breaststroke). UCSB's men finished second and the women fourth at last year's conference meet. The Gauchos have already made a strong showing versus teams such as Oregon State, UC San Diego and Arizona State this season.
UC Santa Barbara freshman Chris Good (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was named BigWest Athlete of the Week for swimming and diving as the season rounds out its first month of competition. Good earned honors for men's swimming and diving for his performances against UC San Diego. The freshman placed first in both the 200 back (1:50.38) and the 200 IM (1:54.79). He also set a lifetime best in a 200 fly exhibition race.
