Chris Peterson Named I Athlete of the Week

March 8, 2011

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Chris Peterson set three new school records at last week's Pac-10 Championships helping him earn this week's I Athlete of the Week honor.

Peterson took fourth place in the 50 freestyle with a school record time of 19.49 seconds, which snapped Jason Lezak's 1998 record in the event by .18 seconds.

He broke Lezak's last remaining school record two days later when he swam the 100 free in 43.45 seconds, which surpassed the previous school record by .05 seconds. Peterson took eighth in the event.

The junior's third record of the weekend was a team effort in the Gauchos' fourth-place 400 free relay. Along with Garrett Thompson, Ryan Hanni and Kevin Ferguson, Peterson helped set a new school record in the event at 2:52.90. The time was 2.03 seconds faster than the previous school record in the event and was a NCAA `B' cut.

Peterson also anchored the Gauchos' fourth-place 200 medley relay, which posted a NCAA `B' cut of 1:28.28, which is the third-best time in program history.

Peterson and the rest of the Gauchos will find out later this week if they have been invited to the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held Mar. 24-26 in Minneapolis, Minn.
