Gauchos Sweep Big West Swimmer of the Week Honors

Jan. 14, 2009

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara swimmers Bradley Matsumoto and Anne Marie May were picked as the Big West Conference's Male and Female Swimmers of the Week it was announced on Wednesday. The honor marks Matsumoto's first of the season and May's second.

At last Saturday's meet against USC, Matsumoto captured first place in the 50 freestyle (20.62) and then placed second in the 100 free (45.41), finishing just .01 seconds behind teammate Jeff Sudbury. The senior finished the meet by helping the Gaucho men's 400 free relay (3:01.25) to a season-best time and second place finish. Matsumoto is the first male Gaucho to earn a conference athlete of the week honor this season.

On the women's end, May captured first place in the 50 free (23.10) during Saturday's meet against the Trojans, which turned out to be the only first place finish by a UCSB female athlete in an individual event during the meet. The junior also anchored the Gauchos' 400 free relay (3:25.37) to a first place finish with a split of 50.02. She then posted a split of 49.93 in the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay, an event UCSB finished second in.

May has posted back-to-back conference athlete of the week honors after also taking the award during the week of Dec. 10 for her standout performance at the Husky Invitational.

The Gauchos will return to Campus Pool this Saturday, Jan. 17 for their first home meet of 2009 when they host Big West Conference foe UC Davis at noon. Admission, as always, is free to all UCSB home swim meets.

UCSB - a nationally recognized university in both academic and athletic excellence - is located on the central coast of California in a picturesque campus and community setting on the Pacific Ocean. Each year over 450 Division I Gaucho student-athletes compete for national championships, succeed in the classroom, and give back to the community.
