UCSB Holds Second at Big West

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Gauchos are in second place after day one of the Big West Championship meet at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, California with 113 points. UC Davis leads with 122 points and UOP is in third with 88 points.

The Gauchos won the 800 free relay, one of only three events swam on the first day of Big West competition. Scott Vogelgesang, Pat Cary, Scott Lindberg and Myles Peck finished with a time of 6:34.89. Scott Vogelgesang set a new school record as a result of leading off the 800 free relay with a time of 1:37.76 breaking Mike Shaffer's 1985 200 free record of 1:37.86.

The 200 medley relay swam by Chris Good, Daniel Nyardi, Daniel McClary and Bradley Matsumoto came in second with a time of 1:30.77. Brooks Felton took fifth in the 1000 free with a time of 9:24.18. Teammates Brent Nolan and Spencer Holbrook took 7th and 9th in the 1000 with times of 9:28.76 and 9:31.05, respectively.

The Gauchos will be back in the water at 11:00 AM for prelims at the Belmont Plaza on the second day of competition and will return for finals at 6 PM.
