SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - "In order to win meets like this you can't do it just on depth. You have to win events," said UC Santa Barbara head coach Gregg Wilson about his men and women's swim teams in their meet against USC on Saturday at Campus Pool.
Both the men and women's swim teams were unable to edge out the strong finishes of the Trojan swimmers. The score for the women's team was USC 143, UCSB 111. The men's meet was much closer with the Gauchos finishing with a total of 123 and USC with 139.
Not surprisingly, the relay events proved to be a high point for UCSB. In the 200 medley relay, the women's "A" team consisting of Naomi Javanifard, Emily Adamczyk, Katie Ure and Anne Marie May took a second place finish with a time of 1:45.12.
The Trojans owned the distance races with two freshmen, Haley Anderson and Richard Charlesworth, finishing first in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events.
Freeman provided the next win for the Gauchos in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.90. Freeman also placed second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.53.
Captain of UCSB's women's team, Ann Marie May, who ranks first nationally in the 50 freestyle, backed up her ranking with a win in the event. Her time was 23.59. May took another first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.31.
The sprints were also a high point for the men's team with UCSB's Peterson taking first in the 50 freestyle with a quick time of 20.63 and first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.64.
The Gauchos also placed first in the 200 breaststroke with freshman Adamczyk taking the top spot with a time of 2:18.44. For the men, UCSB's Travis Jepson finished first with a time of 2:05.48.
The men's meet came down to the wire but USC was able to edge out UCSB with wins in the 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 400 IM, which put the Trojans up by 25 points by the last relay event.
Although both the men and women's 200 freestyle "A" relays placed first, the points were not enough to knock off the Trojans. The women's team consisting of May, Javanifard, Courtney Bauer and Sasza Lohrey came in with a top time of 1:34.31 illustrating their #14 national ranking in the event.
The UCSB men's and women's swim teams will face off against UNLV at Campus Pool on Jan. 23 at high noon.
