STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara swim had a double win against a tough Pacific on Jan 20. The men kept a solid lead throughout the meet and finished with a score of 164-107 while the women started off slow but fought their way back to win with 151-137.
Head Coach Matt Macedo stated, "I didn't feel like we were as sharp as we should have been today but returning to Santa Barbara with three victories this weekend makes for a successful road trip and helps with our conference preparation. Our women had to win the last relay to win the meet for the second day in a row and I was pleased with the way they supported each other and found a way to come out on top."
The winning 400 freestyle relay consisted of Emily Ward, Jacquelyn Harris, Allison Stevens, and Leanne Sun. They battled for not only first place in the race, but for first place for the Gauchos. The women finished with a time of 3:29.99 while UOP came in second with 3:33.16.
"Heaven Quintana and Rachel Forbes lead the way to the women's victory winning multiple individual events and Joe Kmak, Billy Mullis and Joe Lastelic were all multiple event winners for the men," Macedo continued.
Quintana stuck with slightly shorter distances this meet winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.29 and the 100 butterfly with 54.17.
Forbes smoked the competitors in the 1000 freestyle by going 10:09.59 while second place finished with 10:20.59.
On the men's side, they were consistently ahead throughout the meet. Kmak contributed two first places in individual events including the 100 breaststroke (57.80) and the 200 breaststroke (2:04.39).
Mullis also lead the team to victory with two first places in the 200 backstroke (1:47.95) and the 200 indidual medley (1:51.13).
The Gaucho men swept in the fourth event of the day placing first, second, and third; giving the team a significant boost. Lastelic grabbed the win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:40.17 followed by teammates Logan Hotckiss (9:44.81) and Nick DeVito (9:49.79).
UCSB Swim will be honoring their seniors on Jan 27 in the final home meet of the season at Campus Pool starting at 11:00am. Come out to support the Gauchos and celebrate the seniors last dual meet.
"We look forward to honoring our seniors next Saturday at our final home meet of the year against Cal Poly", Macedo stated.
