Santa Barbara, Calif. – Head Coach Matt Macedo has been awarded Men's MPSF Coach of the Year after his first year as UCSB's head coach. Freshman Heaven Quintana snagged Women's MPSF Freshman of the Year for her impressive first collegiate season at UCSB.
Head Coach Matt Macedo, promoted to the role after Gregg Wilson stepped down in 2016, coached the Gauchos to their first MPSF championship in the seven years the meet has been contested.
Entering the meet with strength, the Gauchos set one MPSF and two UCSB school records on the first day of the meet. Dylan Kubick, Billy Mullis, Logan Hotchkiss, and Eric Van Brocklin finished 6:21.50 in the 800 freestyle relay, breaking the UCSB record (7:16.42) set in 2012, and the MPSF conference record (6:28.53) set in 2013 by UNLV. Cheyenne Low, Heaven Quintana, Allie Stevens, and Julia Mikota (1:38.99) broke the MPSF record in the 200 yard medley relay, which was previously set by UCSB in 2012 (1:39.63).
The Gaucho men earned six championship titles this year, spurring them to their MPSF conference win. Over the course of the season, the Gaucho women racked up seven dual meet wins. The Gaucho men and women earned four athlete of the week awards each, three for Billy Mullis and two for women's captain Cheyenne Low. Macedo lead the winning season as Head Coach after being Assistant Head Coach since 2014, and Co-Head Coach in 2016.
Freshman swimmer Heaven Quintana was awarded the MPSF Freshman of the Year honor after earning four MPSF titles, two NCAA B cuts, five all-conference honors, and an MPSF swimmer of the week award. Quintana swam her NCAA B cut events in the 200 butterfly (1:58.73) and 100 butterfly (52.69). She also raced a leg for the record-breaking 200 medley relay and the first place 400 medley relay.
Quintana swam an incredible season leading up to conference, placing first in the 100 butterfly (53.70) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.11) at A3 invitational, stealing seven wins at the UCSB dual meet against UNLV, and being named MPSF Athlete of the Week in January. Quintana is the second UCSB MPSF Freshman of the Year since Katie Records held the honor in 2012.
