SANTA BARBARA, Calif.
UC Santa Barbara junior Billy Mullis and senior team captain Cheyenne Low were both selected as MPSF athletes of the week for the second time this year, after leading impressive wins over UC Davis for the women, and University of Pacific for the men.
Billy Mullis was awarded MPSF male athlete of the week after racking up points for the Gaucho men's win against Pacific this past Sunday. Mullis touched first in the 200 yard backstroke (1:46.49), second in the 100 yard backstroke (49.01), and swam a 21.31 lead-off leg for the winning 200 yard freestyle relay. He also raced an impressive 48.85 backstroke split for the 400 yard medley relay, which placed second.
Mullis currently is ranked first MPSF in the 100 yard backstroke (46.97) and the 100 yard butterfly (47.25). He ranks top 3 in three other individual MPSF events. This is Mullis's second time receiving MPSF male athlete of the week this season.
Cheyenne spearheaded the Gaucho women to victory against UC Davis on Saturday, winning the 100 backstroke (55.21), racing a 26.20 backstroke split for the winning 200 medley relay, and taking second place in the 200 backstroke (2.01.27).
Low continued to dominate the backstroke events the next day against UOP, earning first place wins in the 100 yard backstroke (55.82), 200 yard backstroke (2:01.19), and the backstroke leg of the winning 400 yard medley relay (55.72).
Low currently holds the second fastest MPSF 100 yard backstroke time (54.39), and the third fastest 200 yard backstroke time (1:59.24). This is the second MPSF female athlete of the week award for Low this season.
Watch out for Mullis, Low, and the rest of the UCSB Gauchos, who will be competing at University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) this weekend.
