LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men and women's swimming teams held on to their second place spots through the second day of competition at the A3 Performance Invitational. After performances in the evening finals, the women are in second with 652.5 points, and the men are in second with 694 points.
The women started off the night with a fifth place finish in the women's 200 medley relay (1:42.33). The men placed sixth in the men's heat of the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.92.
Alyssa Shew (4:26.50) and Reid Whaley (4:34.05) both competed in the championship heat of the women's 400 IM, placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Gabe Bolender (3:58.49) represented the UCSB men in the men's 400 IM with a sixth place finish.
Kevin Mendoza (48.14) placed first in the consolation heat of the men's 100 butterfly.
Kelsey Leonard and Lauren Vosseler had a tight race in the consolation heat of the women's 200 freestyle and ended up winning the heat together with a shared time of 1:50.88. Freshmen Logan Hotchikiss (1:39.81) and Bobby Guerra (1:39.82) placed seventh and eighth in the men's championship heat of the 200 freestyle.
Katie Records took home second in the women's 100 breaststroke with a season-best 1:02.67. Charis Hoppe (1:04.34) placed eighth. Simon Wong placed sixth in the men's finals heat of the 100 breast.
Cheyenne Low (55.61) continued the momentum for the women with a fifth place finish in the women's 100 backstroke. Julia Mikota (56.18) touched seventh.
Billy Mullis (50.49) placed eighth in the men's 100 backstroke to wrap up the individual events for the evening.
To wrap up the second day of A3, the Gaucho women took home a huge third place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The men placed fifth with a relay that had three freshmen on it, two of which qualified for the championship heat of the 200 freestyle.
