Gauchos Head Into Final Day of Pac-12 Championships with 125 Points

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.  – Day three of the Pac-12 Championships came to a close with the UC Santa Barbara men's swimming team in 7th place with 125 points. The championship meet will conclude on Saturday.

Senior Randy Aakhus finished in 14th place of the 400 yard individual medley finals in 3:51.77. He gained NCAA 'B' consideration for his 3:49.71 time in the preliminaries of the 400 IM. Sophomore Josh Smith swam a 49.41 in the finals of the 100 yard backstroke.

Sophomore Andy Castilleja swam to a 17th place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 54.35, which is good for NCAA 'B' consideration.

Two of the top swimmers for the Gauchos were scratched from the finals of their respective events so as to keep them fresh for the final day on Saturday. Junior Wade Allen was scratched from the 100 yard butterfly after finishing 20th in the preliminaries. Senior Ryan Hanni was scratched from the 200 yard freestyle after a 17th place finish in the preliminaries.

The final day of the Pac-12 Championships is set to begin Saturday morning at 11am with the preliminaries of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly. The prelims of the 1650 freestyle will begin at 4pm. At 6pm the finals of the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly will conclude the championship meet.
