UCSB Takes Fifth and Sixth in Relays to Open Pac-12 Championships
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The first day of action wrapped up in the men's Pac-12 Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. with UC Santa Barbara taking a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay, and sixth place in the 800 free relay.
In the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay, the Gauchos squad of Randy Aakhus, Tim Freeman, Wade Allen and Ryan Hanni finished with a time of 1:28.18 for fifth place. Their time was the Gauchos fastest of the year in the event and was close to the school record mark of 1:27.63 set in 2008. Cal came away with first place in the event, Stanford took second, Arizona third and USC fourth.
In the 800 free relay Mickey Mowry, Lucas Norman, Alex Campbell and Andrew Dossa posted a time of 6:33.44 giving UCSB a sixth place finish. Their time marked another season best. USC took first in the event with Cal in second and Stanford in third.
Through two events, the Gauchos find themselves in fifth place overall with 54 points. They trail Arizona who is in fourth with 62 points. Cal is in the lead with 74, USC is second with 70 and Stanford is third with 66.
UCSB is right where they want to be according to head coach Gregg Wilson who said that they have their sights set on fifth place in such a competitive conference. They want to finish ahead of Cal Poly, Utah and Arizona State which is where they currently are sitting.
Day two will feature the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free competitions. The preliminary heats will take place at 11:00 a.m. with the finals at 6:00 p.m.
