Swim and Dive teams to face UC San Diego this Friday, Cal Poly on Saturday
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB swimming and diving teams will have their first meet at home this season, when they take on UC San Diego this Friday. The divers will begin the day at 11:00 a.m. and the swimming will get underway at noon. On Saturday, only the swim teams will face Cal Poly as the divers head south for the USC Invitational. That action begins at 11:00 a.m. at Campus Pool.
In the opening meet of the season, the men lost a closely contested battle with Utah, 161-138. The women won two of their three matchups as they defeated Utah, 183-115 and Oregon State, 195-98. They fell, however, to UCLA, 185-110.
It has been three weeks since the Gauchos last took to the water and both teams will look to capitalize on progress made in their first meet.
For the men, redshirt senior Tim Freeman had an outstanding day in the pool against Utah finishing first place in the 100 breastroke and 200 breastroke. He also took second in the 200 individual medley and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay. Sophomore Andrew Barmann has a successful meet winning the 1000 yard freestyle and taking second in the 500 yard freestyle.
For the women, junior Sophia Yamauchi was the top performer, winning both of her individual events in the 100 and 200 breastroke. She was also a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay. Freshman Marissa Neel turned some heads in her first ever collegiate meet, capturing first in the 200 breastroke while narrowly missing out on first in the 100 butterfly.
