NEW YORK, N.Y. - Major League Soccer announced the initial list of 54 college seniors from 36 Division I schools who have been invited to participate in the 2011 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine and UC Santa Barbara defender Michael Boxall was included. The annual player combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Jan. 7-11.
The Combine will separate all players into four teams and feature two games per day on Jan. 8, 10 and 11.
The initial player list was determined by a panel of Division I college coaches, representing all conferences, who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS coaches. The 54 college seniors will be joined by Generation adidas players, additional collegiate players from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools and Division I alternates.
The final player list, Combine coaches and team assignments will be announced in the coming weeks.
Boxall is one of three Big West Conference players to be invited to the Combine along with UC Irvine forward Amani Walker and Cal Poly forward Junior Burgos.
Boxall capped a fantastic collegiate career with Third Team All-American honors and was selected as the Big West's Defensive Player of the Year. He helped the Gauchos to their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, the Big West Tournament title and a 14-5-3 record in 2010.
UCSB has had a total of 18 players selected in the MLS Draft since 2003 with 11 being picked in the SuperDraft.
