Tyler Rosenlund scored a hat trick Saturday to propel the men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Northwestern in an NCAA quarterfinal match. As a result, the Gauchos will advance to the College Cup in St. Louis to take on Wake Forest Dec. 1 in the semifinals.
Rosenlund, who missed UCSB's first eight matches of the season due to a foot injury, had one goal entering the game against Northwestern.
The junior midfielder from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia put the Gauchos up 1-0 at the 9:20 mark before the Wildcats tallied two straight goals to take a 2-1 advantage just prior to halftime. Rosenlund scored the game-winner at 47:07 and completed the hat trick with another goal at 62:22.
It was the first hat trick of the season by any Gaucho player.
With nine wins in its last 10 matches, UCSB heads to its second College Cup in the last three years. Joining the Gauchos and Demon Deacons will be UCLA and Virginia.
