Rob Friend And Reuben Bates Named Men's Soccer Big West Players Of The Year

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Junior forward Rob Friend was chosen co-Big West Offensive Player of the Year and senior defender Reuben Bates was selected as co-Big West Defensive Player of the Year when the honors were announced on Monday. Six other Gauchos were named to the All-Conference teams.

Friend finished the season with a conference leading 26 points on 11 goals and four assists and helped lead the Gauchos to their first ever Big West title. The Kelowna, British Columbia native led the Big West in five offensive categories including points, goals, shots (66), goals per game (.61) and game winning goals (5). His 26 points ranks seventh all-time at UCSB, while his 11 goals places him tied for seventh in Gaucho history. Friend shares the honor with UC Irvine's Jon Spencer. Spencer finished with seven goals and three assists in 20 games to total 17 points.

Bates, one of this season's team captains, spearheaded a defense that held its opponents to 19 goals in 19 matches. The Ventura native played nearly every minute of his 15 matches this season. Bates also scored the first goal of his college career in a 2-2 tie against UC Irvine this year on his only shot of the season. He also tallied an assist in the Gauchos final match of the year. Bates shares teh title with Cal Poly's Barrymore Matthews and UC Irvine's Saul Wolf.

Midfielder and fellow team captain Steven Sosa was also named to the All-Big West First Team on Monday. A four-year member of the UCSB program, Sosa recorded one assist this year, coming in the second match of the season.

Senior forward Jaime Ambriz and freshman defender Tony Lochhead were named to the All-Big West second team. Ambriz and Lochhead finished tied atop the assist standings with a league-high six assists. Ambriz also finished with three goals, including two game-winners. Lochhead played virtually every minute for the Gauchos, missing only 25 minutes over 19 matches.

Drew McAthy, Dan Young and Dan Kennedy were all named to the Big West Honorable Mention squad. Kennedy paced the conference throughout the year in goals allowed, finishing with an average of .80, which was among the nation's leaders. The freshman from Yorba Linda also tallied seven shutouts this season, including three in conference action. Kennedy's .80 goals allowed average ranks third all-time at UCSB, while his shutout total ranks him in sixth on the all-time Gaucho list. McAthy was among the Big West leaders in assists with five and finished second on the team with 13 points. Young was a standout at the midfielder position and recorded two goals and two assists for six points this season.
