Eric Avila helped the men's soccer team clinch the Big West title and an automatic berth in the NCAA tourney with a goal and an assist Saturday as the Gauchos blanked UC Riverside 4-0. The sophomore midfielder from San Diego assisted Eric Frimpong on the first goal of the match (and the eventual game-winner) in the 14th minute. Avila, who got off three shots in the game, then netted his fifth goal of the season at the 65:22 mark to put UCSB up 3-0. Entering the postseason, Avila is tied for the team lead in points with 13 on five goals and three assists. He leads the Gauchos in shots (46) and shots on goal (24) and has started all 19 matches this year.
UCSB will learn where and who it will play in the first round of the NCAAs Monday afternoon.
