UC Santa Barbara enters the week with an overall record of 9-4-3 and a Big West mark of 5-1-1. With their two wins this weekend, the Gauchos moved into first place in the Big West standings. UCSB's 16 points leads UC Irvine's 14. The Gauchos have played one more conference match than the Anteaters, who are 4-0-2 in Big West action this season. The Gauchos and the Anteaters have pulled away from their conference opponents, with Cal State Northridge as the closest competitor with 10 points.
UCSB will return to the road this weekend and will travel north to Cal Poly. The Gauchos hold a 26-12-2 overall record over the Mustangs, including a 3-1 victory earlier this season at Harder Stadium. Cal Poly enters the match with a 4-10-1 overall record, 3-4-0 in Big West action. Last weekend, the Mustangs went 2-0 at home with conference wins over UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge. Cal Poly is led this season by Scott Gellman who has recorded three goals and three assists for nine points in 15 matches. The sophomore midfielder scored both goals in the Mustangs 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge. Mark Jones trails closely behind his teammate with eight points on four goals. Goalkeeper Greg Blevins has seen the bulk of time in the net this season. In 13 matches, he has allowed 25 goals for a 1.91 goals against average, placing him fourth in the Big West.
Gauchos Avenge Only Big West Loss, 1-0 Over Northridge
After suffering their only Big West loss at the hands of Cal State Northridge on October 21st, the Gauchos avenged their loss with a 1-0 victory over the Matadors. Junior forward Rob Friend found the net, for the seventh time this season at the 6:16 mark to put the Gauchos ahead. UCSB never looked back and the score was enough to give the Gauchos the win. The Matadors potent offense that was second in the conference in points, goals and assists per game heading into the match was shut down. UCSB outshot Cal State Northridge 9-3 in the contest, not allowing a single shot from the Matadors in the entire first period. The 1-0 win gave goalkeeper Dan Kennedy his fifth shutout of the season.
UCSB Sweeps Weekend, Defeats UC Riverside 1-0
On October 26th, UCSB shutout UC Riverside in a lopsided 4-0 win at Riverside's Lower Fields. However, this weekend's match was much different, with UCSB edging the Highlanders 1-0. The Gauchos scored at the 64:30 mark on Jaime Ambriz's second goal of the season coming from defender Tony Lochhead. For the second straight match, UCSB's defense was strong, holding the Highlanders to three shots in the contest. It was also the second straight shutout for goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who has six on the season. With the shutout, Kennedy boasts a conference leading .80 goals allowed average.
Gauchos in the Big West
UCSB has solidified its standing as one of the most powerful offensive teams in the Big West this season. The Gauchos currently hold the lead in points (81) and assists per game (1.69). UCSB and UC Irvine are tied at the top of the conference in goals per game (1.69). On the defensive side, the Gauchos and Anteaters are level with both teams only allowing 15 goals in 16 matches. Both squads have posted seven shutouts this season as well. Individually, Dan Kennedy holds the conference lead in goals against average at .80, while Rob Friend leads the Big West with four game-winning goals. Forward Drew McAthy is tied atop the standings with Cal State Northridge's Edwin Miranda with five assists apiece.
