SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior goalkeeper Sam Hayden and senior forward David Walker each earned national recognition on Monday for their part in leading UC Santa Barbara to a 2-0 Big West Conference win over Cal State Fullerton this past Saturday.
Hayden was named to the Soccer America and College Soccer News National Teams of the Week after posting the shutout against the Titans. The Jackson Hole, Wyo. native tallied five saves in what marked his ninth shutout of the year and fifth in Big West play. Hayden is now tied for fourth with Kyle Reynish in the UCSB record book for single season shutouts. Reynish posted nine during the 2005 season. The weekly honors are Hayden's first of the season from Soccer America and College Soccer News, he earned Team of the Week honors from TopDrawerSoccer.com on Oct. 12.
Walker earned his second TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week honor on Monday after leading the Gauchos offensively on Saturday. After assisting Waid Ibrahim's game-winner in the 25th minute, Walker added a goal of his own just eight minutes later. Walker leads all UCSB players with his six goals on the season.
UCSB, which has gone 11-3-1 overall this season and has posted a 5-1-0 record in Big West play, will continue league action on Wednesday when it hosts Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
