UC Santa Barbara vs. Sacramento State
Gauchos Edged 4-2 by Oregon State
With the loss of defender A.J. Albertalli to injury and forward Jaime Ambriz to ared card ejection, the Gauchos put together a new lineup for their match against Oregon State. Starting five freshman, including goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske, the Gauchos jumped ahead with a goal from sophomore Sean Edwards, who was starting the first matchup of the season. Oregon State tied the score in the 29th minute, before Galen Donaldson headed in an Edwards free kick to put UCSB ahead 2-1. However, the Beavers rallied to score three goals over a nine minute span to clinch the victory over the Gauchos. UCSB outshot Oregon State 18-6 in the match and had seven corner kicks to the Beavers two. Edwards totaled three points in the contest, moving him into second in the team standings. Stolhandske tallied two saves in his second start of the season.
UCSB Falls 2-0 To Top-Ranked UCLA
UC Santa Barbara entered Drake Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face top-ranked, top-scoring UCLA, who boasts the nation's premier scorer and stingiest defense. The Gauchos put up a strong attack against the Bruins through out the first half, holding UCLA scoreless. UCSB out shot UCLA 5-2 in the period, led by senior forward Thiago Martins who had two shots in the match. The Bruins came out charged in the second half, scoring their first goal at the 45:19 mark. UCSB had a few scoring chances in the second half including two one-on-one opportunities between forward Joe Hubay-Dies and UCLA goalkeeper DJ Countess. However, Hubay-Dies was unable to capitalize on the chances. Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandkse completed his third full game of the season, while recording five saves.
Maffris Sidelined by Injury
In Sunday's match at UCLA freshman defender Kevin Maffris suffered a Grade Three Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) sprain . The Upland, CA native will be out for four to six weeks. Maffris had seen considerable playing time over the the first four weeks of the season, scoring his only goal in UCSB's season opener against Valpariaso. Maffris also moved into the central defender position after the injury to senior A.J. Albertalli.
Stolhandske Takes Over Starting Position
After recording a shutout in his first complete game in goal, freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandkse got his second and third starts over the weekend. The San Antonio, TX native has posted a 1.71 goals allowed average in his 316 minutes of playing time. He has 19 saves and a save percentage of .760.
