SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman forward David Opoku garnered a pair of weekly honors for his part in helping lead the UC Santa Barbara soccer team to its first wins of the season over the weekend at the Lobo Classic, which was hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Opoku was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week and also named UCSBgauchos.com Gaucho of the Week after leading UCSB for points over the weekend. The freshman scored his first career goal in the 87th minute against No. 6 Harvard on Friday as the Gauchos defeated the Crimson, 2-0.
He then scored his second goal against Buffalo in the 27th minute in a 4-0 win on Sunday. Opoku also assisted Sam Garza's goal in the 66th minute against the Bulls to tally five points during the tournament. Opoku earned All-Tournament honors as well at the Lobo Classic.
Opoku will be back in action with the rest of the Gauchos on Friday, Sept. 24 when UCSB hosts No. 7 UCLA at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. All the action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
