SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - 10th-Ranked UC Santa Barbara senior forward Ivan Becerra was named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week today after netting two goals against UC Riverside this past Sunday in UCSB's league-opener. The award is the first of Becerra's career and marks the first time this season a Gaucho has received the honor.
Becerra's game-winner in the sixth minute against the Highlanders was his first goal of the season which he then followed up with another in the 69th minute to all but seal the match for Santa Barbara. The Los Angeles native is currently alone in third place in the Big West in points with five, trailing teammate Jonathan Davis (7) and Cal State Northridge's Willie Sims(16). Becerra is one of three Gauchos to record a multiple-goal game performance this year. Davis and Hermann Trophy candidate Tyler Rosenlund both achieved the feat September 9th against then 15th-ranked Northwestern.
Becerra and the rest of the UCSB squad return to the pitch this Friday, September 23rd to host Alabama A&M at 7:00 p.m. in Harder Stadium.
