Gauchos Hit Highest Ranking Ever, No. 3 by Soccer America

Sept. 14, 2004

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team reached a new milestone today when it received a No. 3 national ranking from Soccer America, the highest ranking in program history. Prior to the release of today's Top 25 the Gauchos' highest ever mark was a No. 7 ranking from College Soccer News in week seven of the 2003 season.

UCSB is off to the third best start in school history with a perfect 4-0 record, coming off of a pair of wins against then 21st ranked Seton Hall and 30th ranked Connecticut to claim the UConn adidas Classic tournament title. More remarkable is that all four of Santa Barbara's wins have been by shutout, giving Santa Barbara the nation's lead with a perfect 0.00 goals against average.

With Soccer America's No. 3 ranking of the Gauchos, its sets up a Top 3 showdown this weekend when UCSB squares off against No. 1 Indiana at the UNM adidas/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational on Saturday, September 19 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Game time for the match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PST.

In addition to today's record setting ranking, this year's squad has already set a number records despite it being early in the season. The Gauchos entered the season with a best ever preseason ranking of 13th from both Soccer America and College Soccer News. And after UCSB's shutout against Seton Hall, they set a new school record for shutouts to start a season, surpassing the previous mark of two.

The Gauchos are also received national rankings this week of 9th by CSN, and 11th by the NSCAA and Soccer Times. Indiana is the consensus No. 1 in all four of the major national polls.
