Aug. 13, 2008

BEIJING, China - Defender Michael Boxall and his New Zealand Oly-Whites were eliminated from the Olympics Wednesday as Belgium scored in the first half and held on to win 1-0 at Shenyang Stadium.

Belgium's Faris Haroun tallied the game's lone score in the 35th minute on a header from a corner kick. Just after halftime, New Zealand's Daniel Ellensohn was tagged with a red card for a late tackle and the Oly-Whites played the rest of the match a man down, as they had against China earlier in the Games.

Boxall, a sophomore at UCSB, got his second straight start and again played all 90 minutes. He registered his first Olympic shot in the match.

The Oly-Whites completed their first Olympics with an 0-2-1 record in group play and finished 14th of 16 squads overall. Brazil (3-0-0) and Belgium (2-1-0) will advance to the quarterfinals, while China (0-2-1) and New Zealand are done.

Brazil, which has scored nine goals over three matches, will take on Cameroon in the quarterfinals, while Belgium will play Italy. Both games take place Saturday.
