UC Santa Barbara alum Tony Lochhead will make his first FIFA World Cup appearance on June 15 as the New Zealand National Team takes-on Slovakia in Rustenburg, South Africa. Lochhead is the first Gaucho to play in a World Cup.
New Zealand is playing in Group F along with Italy, Slovakia and Paraguay. The team advanced to the FIFA World Cup after defeating Bahrain, 1-0, in the Asia-Oceania World Cup Playoff at Wellington's Westpac Stadium in November.
This marks just the second time in New Zealand's history that the All Whites have advanced to the World Cup. The first time was in 1982, the same year Lochhead was born.
Lochhead, who played with the Gauchos from 2001-04, also played professionally for the New England Revolution after graduating from UCSB. He made his debut with the All Whites in October of 2003 and played every minute of New Zealand's Confederations Cup campaign this past year.
The Tauranga native was recently featured in an ESPNsoccernet World Cup preview of the New Zealand team. To check it out, click here.
