52,018 Fans Lead UCSB to NCAA All-Time Attendance Record
March 17, 2010
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara set the NCAA Division I single-season men's soccer attendance record this past fall with an average count of 4,335 fans per game it was announced by the NCAA.
The Gauchos hosted 12 games during the 2009 season and welcomed a total of 52,018 fans to Harder Stadium throughout the year. The UCSB average was 1,298 more fans per game than second-ranked Connecticut.
Out of the top-10 most attended games this past fall, UCSB played in four and hosted three. The nation's most highly attended 2009 game was the Oct. 2 rematch between 2004 College Cup finalists UCSB and Indiana, which drew 10,114 fans to Harder Stadium for the Fox Soccer Channel televised event. The game ranks as the sixth most highly attended regular season contest all-time and the third highest at a college soccer stadium.
The Gauchos' Nov. 4 match-up at Cal Poly - in which they captured the Big West regular season crown with 0-0 tie - was the second most attended game of the year with 9,824 fans. The Nov. 7 home match with UC Davis (6,854 fans) and the Oct. 7 match with Cal Poly (5,842) rank fifth and eighth, respectively.
The Gauchos have led the nation for average attendance the past three seasons. In 2007, the year after the Gauchos captured the NCAA title, UCSB averaged 3,435 fans and in 2008, that average improved to 3,444. The Gauchos' 2009 attendance average tops the previous NCAA record of 3,629 fans per game, set by New Mexico in 2005.
The fall season also marked the first year that UCSB led the nation in total attendance (52,018). Connecticut holds the national record for total attendance with 58,392 fans set in 2007.
The UCSB men's soccer team posted a 17-5-2 overall record, captured the Big West regular season title after going 8-1-1 in conference play, advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament and ended the season ranked No. 10 by the NSCAA.
This fall, UCSB will host the 2010 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Dec. 10 and 12. For up-to-date information on this monumental event, click here.
