SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team will host the Mexico U-20 Men's National Team in one of three exhibition games at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium this spring. The match against Mexico is slated for February 23 at 7:30 p.m. Portions of the proceeds from the match will help benefit the Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
The Mexican U-20 National Team's game at UCSB is part of a five-match tour of California aimed at raising money for the people of Haiti and raising awareness of their plight. Games will take place in San Jose, Los Angeles, Santa Maria, Lancaster and Santa Barbara. The Mexico roster is comprised of players from First and Second Division Professional teams.
In addition to the gate receipts benefiting Haiti relief, the Red Cross will also be on hand at the match and is encouraging fans to bring donations of bottled water to the game.
"We are happy to be part of this game because it's a great cause," head coach Tim Vom Steeg said. "We will have only been training for six days when the match takes place and while we may not be our sharpest, it is a great opportunity to play against a very talented group of players."
Tickets for the match are $20 for adults and $10 for kids. UCSB students can receive a $5 discount off of their ticket price if they show their student ID at the time of purchase. Presale tickets are available at all soccer stores in the Santa Barbara area. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the box office at Harder Stadium one hour prior to kick-off. UCSB Athletics will not be offering presale tickets for this event.
This game will mark the second time that UCSB has faced a Mexican National Team in the last six months as the Gauchos took on the Mexico U-17 team this past fall. During the Sept. 22 game, UCSB posted a thrilling 2-1 victory in front of 8,452 fans.
In April, the Gauchos will play host to New Mexico on Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 24, they will host their annual Alumni Game at 1 p.m.
UC Santa Barbara is proud to be hosting the highly anticipated 2010 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Dec. 10 and 12. For more information on this exciting event, please click here.
