On a record-breaking night, the 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team blasted UC Irvine in a Big West Conference match, 5-0.
The win gives the Gauchos a 17-2-1 overall record and a 9-0-1 mark in league play. The 17 wins is one better than the previous school record of 16 set in 1982 and UCSB has now won back-to-back Big West Conference Championships.
In addition to the team record for wins, two individuals set new school statistical standards. Senior forward Rob Friend scored goals in the 27th minute and in the 79th minute, giving him 19 on the season, one better than Scott Grasinger's previous school record of 18, also set in 1982. Fittingly, Friend's first goal was assisted on by junior midfielder Memo Arzate, giving him 18 assists on the year. With the 18 assists, Arzate breaks the previous record of 17, set in 1982 by Eric Price.
UCSB didn't score its first goal in the match until the 20:26 mark when sophomore forward Drew McAthy scored from about ten yards out on the left side off of cross from sophomore midfielder Jon Apilado. McAthy's goal opened the floodgates. Friend scored his first at the 26:07 mark and then McAthy scored his second of the match and 16th of the season just 1:04 later at the 27:11 mark. Like his first goal, McAthy's second was assisted on by Apilado.
Junior midfielder David McGill capped the first half scoring with a goal in the 35th minute. Sophomore midfielder Matt Bly assisted on McGill's goal and it was UCSB's fourth goal in less than 14 minutes.
The Gauchos and Anteaters were scoreless in the second half until Friend scored on an assist from McGill in the 79th minute.
UCSB and UC Irvine each had 14 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Danny Kennedy and freshman goalkeeper Kyle Reynish combined for UCSB's ninth team shutout of the season. Each keeper played a full half with Kennedy getting the start.
The Anteaters drop to 8-8-4 overall and 3-4-3 in the Big West. The Gauchos will now take their 17-2-1 record and await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday afternoon.
