No. 14 Men's Soccer Downs Cal State Fullerton 2-0 To Claim Sole Possession Of The 2002 Big West Conference Championship
Nov. 13, 2002
Fullerton, Calif. -
The 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team claimed sole possession of the 2002 Big West Championship, downing Cal State Fullerton 2-0 to remain undefeated in conference action.
Sophomore forward Drew McAthy notched his 14th goal of the season at the 12:12 mark of the match, netting the rebound off of a David McGill shot from just outside the penalty box on the right side. The assist was McGill's first of two on the night as he now has 13 on the year and has moved into fourth all-time at UCSB for assists in a season. McAthy's goal bumped him up into a fourth place tie with Scott Grassinger (1982) for most goals by a Gaucho in single season.
The game remained 1-0 for until the 34:02 when the Gauchos' Rob Friend redirected a Memo Arzate shot that was set up by McGill. McGill found Arzate near the top-right of the penalty box with a good look on frame. Arzate then fired a shot towards the left post that Friend intercepted and put into the back of the net. Now with 17 goals on the year, Friend needs just one goal to tie UCSB's single season scoring record set back in 1982 by Scott Grassinger. And with his 17th assist this season, Arzate has tied the Gauchos' single season assist record originally set by Eric Price in 1982.
The Gauchos now have 59 goals on the year and are sporting a 16-2-1 overall record, and an 8-0-1 Big West record with one regular season game remaining. UCSB closes out the 2002 regular season with a game against conference foe UC Irvine this Saturday, November 16th in Santa Barbara. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Harder Stadium.
