Rob Friend broke the match open with a pair of second-half goals five minutes apart as the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 5-1 in Big West Conference action on the rad Friday night.
Friend scored his eighth goal of the season in the 52nd minute off of a cross from Jaime Ambriz, then added his ninth goal in the 57th minute on a breakaway off an assist from Darren Doi. Friend's second goal made it 3-0 Gauchos.
Nate Boyden scored on a 12-yard shot off of a cross from Kevin Maffris, and Gene Deering tallied UCSB's final goal of the match with just six seconds remaining on a breakaway off of a Joe Hubay-Dies throw-in.
Cal Poly averted a shutout in the 77th minute when freshman forward Mark Jones scored his fifth goal of the season, a ten-yarder drilled off a corner kick from James Newton.
UCSB's first goal was scored by Dan Young off a corner from Tony Lochhead in the 25th minute.
With the victory, the Gauchos improve to 10-4-3 overall, 6-1-1 in the Big West. With 19 points, UCSB now leads UC Irvine by four-points. The Anteaters were held to a 0-0 tie by UC Riverside tonight, giving them an oerall 8-3-6 record, 4-0-3 in the Big West and 15 points. Cal Poly drops to 4-11-1 overall, 3-5-0 in Big West play.
The Gauchos close the regular season next weekend, playing at UC Irvine on Friday, November 16, and then at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, November 18.
