IRVINE, Calif. - Senior midfielder Brennan Tennelle scored his first two goals of the season and sophomore midfielder Ciaran O'Brien scored a goal in his third consecutive match as 12th-ranked UC Santa Barbara overcame a 1-0 deficit to record its third straight win, 3-1 at UC Irvine.
The Anteaters (6-5-4 overall, 1-4-2 in the Big West) jumped on the Gauchos (9-3-3 overall, 6-1-1 in the Big West) for a goal in the 13th-minute as All-Big West midfielder Matt Murphy scored off of a free kick from about 30 yards out on the right side. The ball sailed over the UCSB wall and into the upper-left corner of the net. The score was UCI's only shot on goal of the match.
At 26:02, sophomore defender Jon Curry drove down the left side of the box and booted a cross to the center of the box. Tennelle collected Curry's pass and drove a shot past UCI goalkeeper Pat Barton to tie the score a 1-1.
Early in the second half, at the 48:16 mark, O'Brien pounced on a misplayed ball and drove a shot past Barton. The goal was his sixth of the season and his fourth in the last three matches.
Less than five minutes later, at 52:58, Tennelle completed the scoring when he scored on a rebound of an O'Brien shot to make the score 3-1 Gauchos.
UCSB oushot UCI 14-6 overall and 8-1 in shots on goal. The match was cleanly played with each team recording just nine fouls.
The win gives Santa Barbara 19 points in the Big West standings, three ahead of Cal Poly, which battled to a 0-0 tie at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday afternoon. The first-place Gauchos and second-place Mustangs will do battle at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Harder Stadium. On Oct. 17, Cal Poly defeated UCSB in San Luis Obispo, 2-1, setting a league attendance record in the process.
