SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior forward Drew McAthy was not in the starting lineup when UC Santa Barbara played the University of San Francisco in men's soccer on Friday night. He was, however, in at the end and that was the difference in the match.

Just over a minute into overtime, McAthy headed-in a cross from senior midfielder Memo Arzate to break a 1-1 deadlock and give UCSB a 2-1 victory over USF. The goal was McAthy's 11th of the season. The win ended the Gauchos' two-match losing streak and improved their overall record to 12-3-1. The loss drops the Dons to 7-10-0.

The match was played on a sloppy, rain-soaked field and in a constant rain. The halftime score of 0-0 reflected the conditions. UCSB, in fact, failed to produce a shot in the first 45-minutes. USF, which outshot the Gauchos 15-11 overall, had five shots in the first half but failed to score.

Santa Barbara got its first shot and goal of the match at 41:14 when senior midfielder David McGill lobbed a cross from just beyond the right side of the penalty box and senior forward Neil Jones jumped up and headed a shot to the far post, just past the outstretched arm of USF goalkeeper Geremy Uhl. The score was Jones' 11th of the year.

San Francisco tied the score in the 57th-minute. UCSB failed to clear the ball after a corner kick by the Dons and forward Matt Languis pounced on the opportunity and drove a shot past goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

The 20th-ranked Gauchos return to Big West play on Wednesday, November 5, when they travel to Cal State Northridge for a 7:00 p.m. match at Matador Field.
