SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Forward Sebastian Galmarini scored the only goal of the match at the 79:15 mark to give visiting UC Irvine a 1-0 upset of ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara in Big West men's soccer on Wednesday night.
Galmarini took the ball from UCSB midfielder Corey Wood about ten yards above the penalty box, drove down the left side, beating another defender and shoved a shot to the far post, past a diving Gaucho goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, giving his team the victory. For Galmarini, the goal was his team-leading fifth of the season.
UCSB was outshot in the match by a 14-11 count, but the Gauchos had several quality chances. Near the end of the first half, freshman forward Johnny Alcaraz drove past a pair of Anteater defenders toward the end line, flipped a pass in front of the goal but junior forward Drew McAthy chipped the ball just over the crossbar.
The loss was the second in a row for the Gauchos and the defeats come on the heels of a 14-match Big West unbeaten string. The loss also snaps UCSB's 11-match home Big West winning streak. The Gauchos are now 11-3-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Big West. UC Irvine improves to 6-8-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league.
The Gauchos returns to action on Friday night when they host the University of San Francisco in a non-conference match that will begin at 5:00 p.m.
