Senior forward Rob Friend scored his 13th goal of the season unassisted in the 40th-minute to break a scoreless tie, and UC Santa Barbara piled-up a 3-0 lead and held on top win at Cal Poly, 3-1 on Friday night.
Junior midfielder David McGill gave UCSB a 2-0 lead when he converted on a penalty kick in the first minute of the second half. Darren Doi, also a junior midfielder, scored the first goal of his career in the 67th-minute. He scored on a 15-yard right cross from McGill.
Cal Poly scored its only goal of the match in the 83rd-minute when sophomore midfielder Eibad Ghori came out of a scramble for the ball in the middle of the box and converted from six yards out. Scott Gellman and Colm Shalvey were credited with assists for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly had another outstanding opportunity to score in the 76th-minute when Gellman was awarded a penalty kick attempt, but UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Danny Kennedy made one of his eight saves in turning away the shot. Overall, UCSB outshot the Mustangs 15-13.
The win improves Santa Barbara to 11-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Big West. Cal Poly falls to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in league. The Gauchos will take on top-ranked Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Cal State Fullerton in a match that kicks off at 4:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast on KCSB, 91.9 FM in Santa Barbara or on www.KCSB.org.
