San Luis Obispo, Calif. -
Matt Bly's two goals highlighted No. 7 UC Santa Barbara's 3-1 Big West Conference win at Cal Poly, running UCSB's conference winning streak to twelve. Memo Arzate added his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick to round out the Gauchos' scoring. The win improves Santa Barbara's record to 11-1-1 and a perfect 4-0-0 in Big West action. The loss puts was the Mustangs' sixth straight at the hands of UCSB and drops them to 4-5-3 and 1-3-1 in conference play.
Junior "slash" Matt Bly gave the Gauchos a 1-0 halftime lead in the 20th minute when he collected a ball that skimmed off freshman defender Jeff Murphy's leg after a Tony Lochhead corner kick. The goal was Bly's first of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Arzate put UCSB up 2-0 when he converted on penalty kick in the 56th minute. The PK was set up when senior midfielder David McGill, once again back in the lineup, ripped a shot that a Cal Poly defender block with his hand. McGill who actually started the match, just two weeks after he injured his leg against LMU. His return tonight was actually somewhat remarkable considering he was not originally supposed to return for 3-5 weeks.
Bly's second goal of the night and of the season was set up when junior forward Drew McAthy cleared a ball over the backline that Bly one-touched past his defender and fired into the top corner.
Junior two-time all-conference goalkeeper Dan Kennedy picked up his 11th win of the season in goal, posting the next best thing to a shutout. Making six saves on the night, including two back-to-back saves on a Cal Poly penalty kick late in the match. His lone goal allowed game on a controversial free kick in the 87th minute.
UCSB next travels to Cal State Fullerton this Saturday, October 25th in hopes of increasing its lead on the rest of the Big West Conference. After the Fullerton match, the Gauchos will return home next week to host UC Irvine on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:00 p.m. in Harder Stadium.
