SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Freshman defender Jeff Murphy scored on a header off of a Memo Arzate corner kick at the 63:52 mark, snapping a 2-2 tie and giving UC Santa Barbara a 3-2 win over visiting Cal State Northridge on Saturday night. The assist by Arzate was his 13th of the season and 31st of his career, breaking the Big West Conference record previously held by Ricky Villa of Fresno State.
Murphy's goal completed a flurry of scoring by the Gauchos and Matadors. With the score tied at 1-1, UCSB forward Drew McAthy followed a rebound of a Darren Doi shot to make the score 2-1 at 61:19. The goal was McAthy's tenth of the season.
At the 62:55 mark, Northridge's Gabriel Montoya was tripped in the penalty box by Santa Barbara defender Jon Apilado. The Matadors were awarded a penalty kick and Willie Sims converted to tie the score at 2-2 and set the stage for Murphy's game-winner and Arzate's league record.
Northridge scored first in the 25th-minute of the match when defender Edwin Miranda scored off a rebound of a shot by Joshua LeRoy. The 1-0 lead held up for just ten minutes as Neil Jones scored his tenth goal of the year in the 35th-minute off of assists from Arzate and Matt Bly.
The Gauchos outshot the Matadors by a 23-8. Northridge goalkeeper Radames Lafaurie had nine saves. The win improves UCSB to 10-1-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Big West. Northridge, ranked 24th in the NSCAA/adidas poll, drops to 7-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Big West.
UCSB returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 when it travels to Cal Poly for a 7:00 p.m. Big West match.
