SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Eric Avila scored in the 81st minute to snap a scoreless tie and give 15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (7-2-3) a 1-0 win over visiting UC Davis (6-5-2) in non-conference soccer Saturday night.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half with the Gauchos outshooting the Aggies 9-0. UCSB had a number of dangerous offensive chances, but UCD goalkeeper Derek Shaffer was up to the task with five saves.

The first 35 minutes of the second half was much the same as the first half. The Gauchos continued to get shots on goal and Shaffer continued to record saves, finishing with eight. UCD muster three second half shots, but none were on-frame.

UCSB finally broke the deadlock at the 80:54 mark when junior midfielder Eric Frimpong carried the ball into the UCD box, approaching the touch-line 15 yards to the left of the near post. Frimpong cut the ball back and played it to Avila who was running left-to-right across the top of the Aggie box. Avila took a couple touches, pushing the ball in front of the Davis box, pulling Shaffer off his line. Avila hammered home a shot beyond the arms of a scrambling Shaffer, just inside the near post. It was his second goal of the season.

Neither team came close to scoring in the final 9:06. The Gauchos finished the game with a 19-3 shot advantage and junior goalkeeper Kyle Reynish did not need a save to record his fifth shutout of the season.

With the win, UCSB is now unbeaten in its last five matches (3-0-2) and the Gauchos have lost just one since a season-opening loss. They will travel to nationally-ranked UCLA for a 7:00 p.m. match on Thursday, Oct. 20.
