Men's Soccer Falls To New Mexico In Overtime, 2-1

After posting three straight wins, UC Santa Barbara fell to New Mexico 2-1 in a double overtime match on Sunday afternoon at New Mexico's Soccer Complex. The loss evens the Gaucho's record to 1-1 in MPSF play, 6-7 overall.

The Lobos posted the first score in the 25th minute to take an early lead. However, in the 30th minute, senior forward Thiago Martins found the back of the net for the fourth time this season t tie the score at 1-1. Throughout the rest of regulation play, the score would not change. Goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske provided a strong force at goal recording six saves, his highest output since September 8, where he notched seven saves against Western Kentucky.

The Gauchos played well defensively, keeping 12 of the Lobos 14 shots from the net. Yet, in the 105th minute of play, just 14 seconds into the second overtime period, New Mexico scored off the foot of freshman Erik Cronkrite to take the win.

UCSB was outshot 14-9 in the contest, the first time the Gauchos were outshot since their September 24th meeting with top-ranked UCLA.

The Gauchos return to MPSF play on Sunday, October 15th at UCSB's Harder Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. meeting with 16th-ranked Cal State Fullerton.
