The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team opened its 2000 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season with a road victory at UNLV Friday night, 3-1.
The victory, UCSB's third in a row, improves the team to 1-0 in the MPSF and 6-6 overall.
Junior forward Jaime Ambriz opened the scoring with a rebound goal at the 33:45 mark of the first half. Ambriz was assisted by Brandon Meeks on the score. The Gauchos made it 2-0 at half when Dan Young whistled one past Rebel goalkeeper Scott Winstead in the 41st minute. UCSB outshot UNLV in the first half, 9-3.
The Rebels narrowed the deficit to 2-1 at the 63:47 mark when freshman Alejandro Hernandez scored a goal. Santa Barbara, however, iced the victory when Joe Hubay-Dies scored on a breakaway at the 73:45 mark of the match.
UCSB will take its three match winning streak to Albuquerque on Sunday, October 8, for a 1:00 p.m. MPSF match against the University of New Mexico.
