San Diego, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team extended its season-opening winning streak to eight games and senior forward Rob Friend extended his streak of consecutive games with a goal to 12, as the Gauchos blanked San Diego State 3-0 on Friday night.

Friend didn't waste time extending his streak as he scored at the 6:08 mark on a one-timer. He took a Gene Deering pass to the right of Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes and he shoved a shot just inside the right post. It was Friend's tenth goal of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Drew McAthy scored his seventh goal of the campaign at the 41:19 mark when he hit a one-timer from the center of the box. McAthy's goal was assisted by Matt Kubota.

UCSB closed out the scoring in the 64th-minute. Junior midfielder Memo Arzate cracked a cross from just outside of the penalty box. McAthy chested it down inside the goal box and sophomore midfielder Neil Jones was there to drive it past Barnes. The goal was Jones' first of the season.

On the night, the Gauchos outshot the Aztecs by a 23-8 count.

Santa Barbara improves to 8-0 on the season while San Diego State drops to 2-6-1. The Gauchos are 4-0-0 in home matches this season, outscoring the opposition by a 17-2 count.

UCSB, which is ranked 25th by the NSCAA, will have toughest test of the season on Sunday when it travels to Loyola Marymount to take seventh-ranked Lions.
