Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. -
After holding Loyola Marymount scoreless through 118 minutes, UC Santa Barbara lost a heartbreaking, 1-0 match with two minutes remaining in the second overtime period. The Gauchos are 3-6, while the Lions improve to 6-3.

The Gauchos played well on both sides of the ball through out the first half of play, outshooting the Lions 7-3 in the period. UC Santa Barbara returned from halftime ready to earn their first victory in the last five matches. Senior forward Thiago Martins, who led UCSB with four shots on the night, shot a penalty kick for the Gauchos in the 61st minute that sailed just over the net. The Gaucho offense continued to battle in the half, unable to capitalize on three corner kicks and five shots. Junior forward Jaime Ambriz, who returned to play after missing two matches, battled an aching hamstring that kept on the sidelines for much of the period. Defensively, UCSB managed to hold off the Lions, who had six shots in the half. Freshman goakeeper Erik Stolhandske notched his only save of the contest in the 85th minute.

In the first sudden victory overtime period, Martins once again had goal scoring opportunities that could not be finished, one in the 95th minute and one in the 100th minute. Despite missing various chances to take the victory, UCSB's defense continued to keep the Lions off the clock through out the period.

The second overtime period proved to be much of the same. Martins had another clear shot on goal, but once again the opportunity was missed. After 12 added minutes of scoreless play, Loyola Marymount's, Arturo Torres managed to guide the ball out the congestion in front of the net past Stolhandske to end the match with two minutes left. UCSB outshot the Lions 17-12.

The Gauchos return to action Friday night in a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Centenary College at Harder Stadium.
