SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara soccer team used a spectacular first half goal by senior midfielder Bryan Byrne and a pair of second half goals by senior forward Ivan Becerra to record a 3-1 win over visiting Alabama A&M Friday night.
The Gauchos got on the board at the 22:11 mark in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Rosenlund slid a ball through the box towards the end line, about 10 yards to the left of the goal. Byrne fought through a crowd and with the ball just barely off the end line, rocketed a shot from an impossible ankle that hooked through the outstretched hands of Bulldog goalkeeper Mlondi Mdluli.
UCSB scored twice in the second half. At 52:54, Byrne hit a cross from left-to-right in front of the Alabama A&M goal. Becerra one-timed a shot just inside the right post to give the Gauchos a 2-0 edge.
In the 57th-minute, it was Becerra again. Rosenlund dribbled the ball up the middle of the field just above the box. He passed to sophomore defender Myles Davis on his left flank. Davis took a couple of dribbles just inside the left side of the box and drove a pass through the box to Becerra who pounded another shot past Mdluli at 56:29 to give UCSB a 3-0 edge.
The Bulldogs scored their only goal of the night at 70:11 when David Kimbugwe took a direct free kick from just above the right side of the penalty box. Somehow, Kimbugwe's kick snuck through the Gaucho wall and eluded junior goalkeeper Kyle Reynish just inside the left post.
Becerra, last week's Big West Player of the Week, has now scored four goals in his last two matches. The Gauchos, who have now won four consecutive games, improved to 4-1-1 on the season. Alabama A&M drops to 2-6-0. UCSB travels to Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 25, for a 4:00 p.m. match against the Lions.
