ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Coming off of its first win and shutout of the season on Friday, the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team carried its momentum into Sunday morning's match against Buffalo and exploded for a 4-0 victory over the Bulls at the Lobo Classic being held the University of New Mexico's Soccer Complex.
With the win, UCSB improves to 2-2-2 on the season while Buffalo fell to 3-4-0. The four goals scored were the most by the Gauchos since Sept. 11, 2009 when UCSB defeated Rutgers by the same score during a Fox Soccer Channel televised game at Harder Stadium.
The Gauchos struck early on Sunday. In the eighth minute, sophomore Sam Garza crossed a corner kick into the box. Freshman David Opoku headed the ball down, but it hit one of the Buffalo defenders. Junior Tim Pontius secured the rebound and shot it past Buffalo goalkeeper Nick Fetterman.
UCSB distanced itself further in the 27th minute when Opoku scored his second goal of the weekend. The play began when Gaucho goalkeeper Sam Hayden punted the ball to Opoku, who passed the ball to Garza on the right side of the field. Garza carried the ball up the right side then passed the ball back to Opoku, who scored from the left side of the box.
Leading 2-0, the Gauchos continued to pound away in the second half. In the 66th minute Opoku played the ball into Garza, who went left and beat the goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
The final UCSB goal came with just over three minutes left to play. James Kiffe crossed the ball to Christian Ramirez, who headed the ball to the left side past the goalkeeper for his first career goal.
For the match, UCSB out-shot Buffalo 14-6 and scored on four of its six shots on-frame.
In the goal, Hayden posted his second shutout of the season and the 18th of his career. He tallied five saves, tying his season-high.
For his efforts, Hayden was named the Lobo Classic Defensive MVP while Danny Barrera was named Offensive MVP. Opoku, David and Garza all earned All-Tournament Team honors as well for helping lead the Gauchos to a 2-0-0 tournament record.
The Gauchos return home this week to host UCLA in a non-conference match-up at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Friday, Sept. 24. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. Prior to first touch, UCSB Athletics will honor several of its most loyal men's soccer supporters in a Golden Scarf ceremony.
