SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (4-1-0) had its four-game season-opening win streak snapped on Sunday evening with a 2-1 loss to visiting Loyola Marymount (3-1-0) at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The Gaucho offense, which had scored four goals against visiting Rutgers on Friday, was shutout for 86 minutes by the Lions.

UCSB controlled the ball early in the first half, with Luis Silva and Michael Tetteh taking the first two shots of the game. Things took an ominous turn in the 13th minute when senior forward David Walker fell and injured his hand, forcing him to leave the game.

Loyola Marymount's offense picked up from that point forward and after three failed shots, the fourth proved to be the charm in the 24th minute. Logan McDaniel played the ball over the top to Rafael Baca who beat two Gaucho defenders on a counter attack, scoring on a shot fired from straight up the middle of the box.

Almost exactly 10 minutes later, the Lions struck again when Phil Da Silva fired a shot that was blocked by a diving Sam Hayden. Da Silva collected the rebound and fired the ball back into the wide-open Gaucho goal, pushing LMU's lead to 2-0.

In the waning minutes of the first half, the Gauchos got several good looks at the goal as Waid Ibrahim and Jonathan Zerah each had shots go wide and Michael Nonni fired off a shot that was saved by Loyola Marymount's goalie, Max Young.

The Gaucho offense picked up steam in the second half, as UCSB out-shot LMU, 11-2 during the period. Young was on-fire though; posting five of his eight saves during the second half.

It wasn't until the 86th minute that the Gauchos got on the scoreboard. Danny Barrera crossed the ball to James Kiffe who was able to flick the ball to a waiting Martin Hedevag. The senior headed the ball into the goal for his fourth goal of the season, all of which have been headers. Unfortunately for UCSB, that would be the last goal of the game as the Gauchos ran out of time, falling 2-1.

Barrera led the Gauchos with five shots during the game, three of which were on-frame. Michael Tetteh had three total shots with two on-goal. Hedevag's goal came on his lone attempt.

In goal, Hayden tallied a season-high four saves for UCSB.
