It took a bit longer than they wanted, but the 14th ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team defeated the University of San Diego 1-0 on a Neil Jones goal 8:50 into overtime. With the win the Gauchos improve to 4-0-1 on the year and the Toreros dropped to 1-2-2.
Junior goalkeeper Dan Kennedy came up huge for UCSB in between the pipes making seven saves, including a diving deflection to his right in the fourth minute of overtime the keep Santa Barbara into the game. For San Diego freshman keeper Lance Friesz made six saves.
Both team battled back-and-forth the entire match with the hosts outshooting the Gauchos 19-12, but it was UCSB had the one that counted. Senior midfielder Matt Kubota took the ball to the touchline on the right side of the goal, beat his defender and chipped a pass into the box. After a brief scramble and a Friesz deflected, Jones crashed the box and barried the ball into the back of the net with his head.
It was Santa Barbara's fourth consecutive victory and it remains undefeated in its 2003 campaign. Junior forward Drew McAthy and Kubota each tallied three shots to lead UCSB, Ryan Guy paced the Toreros with six.
UCSB now returns home to host crosstown rival and NAIA powerhouse Westmont in the annual Bryant and Sons Cup. Kickoff is schedule for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20th in Harder Stadium.
