SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior forward Drew McAthy went scoreless in UC Santa Barbara's opening-match tie at San Jose State, but since then he has been almost unstoppable.

On Friday night, McAthy scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the 87th-minute to snap a 1-1 tie, leading the Gauchos to a 2-1 win over visiting Michigan State. McAthy has now scored six goals in the last three matches, including game-winners in all three.

The Gauchos and Spartans were scoreless at half, but at the 56:16 mark, senior midfielder David McGill sent a cross from just outside the top right portion of the penalty box into the back post and McAthy sent it home with a diving header.

Michigan State tied the score at the 83:29 mark. Sophomore forward Ryan McMahen dumped the ball into the box and senior forward Thomas Trivelloni chipped it into the back of the net.

McAthy scored the game-winner on a penalty kick at the 86:35 mark. Senior forward Neil Jones hit McAthy with a pass just inside the top of the penalty box. McAthy found senior forward Gene Deering open in front of the net and passed it off to him. A pair of Spartan defenders collapsed on Deering, taking him to the ground and they were whistled for the foul, setting-up the game-winning score.

Santa Barbara outshot Michigan State by a 19-4 margin. Junior goalkeeper Danny Kennedy did not record a save in the win, but Spartan goalkeeper Mike Robinson had eight.

The Gauchos have now won three in a row and they remain unbeaten at 3-0-1. Dating back to the 2002 campaign, UCSB has now won 11 consecutive home matches. Michigan State drops to 2-2 on the season.

Santa Barbara returns to action on Sunday, September 14, when it travels to the University of San Diego for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The encounter between UCSB and USD will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament first round match won by the Gauchos, 2-0.
